The Hibi Travel Story
Some years ago, our Japan adventure started out slow. Visiting tricky-to-reach regions of remote Japan, by bike and battered hiking boots, we were struck by how wonderful rural communities were slowly disappearing. We felt with a little direction, these places could be more easily reached, benefitting both the locals and visitors looking for something special. Slow travel across those areas of Japan you won’t find in a standard guidebook can still be tough on your own, but with the right support and careful planning, is not only possible, but we’d argue an essential part of any Japan trip.
Our main aim is to provide life-changing trips tailored to each individual’s interests and level, while supporting the communities visited. In addition to our own extensive experience we also partner with a great number of local organizations to support such communities, and through strong links with individuals and collectives, we have set deep roots throughout Japan, which is the basis of Hibi. From these roots, we hope to share our travel experiences and build long-cherished connections throughout Japan. We hope you’ll come on an adventure with us.
What sets our trips apart
We want to rethink the purpose of travelling. To give you the best time possible, one of our key principles is to ask you to challenge yourself and your preconceptions about what a Japan itinerary should consist of. Rather than over-exerting yourself, or stuffing in too much content, we want to consider what you want to get out of your time in Japan, and to help appreciate the moments and small touches, which offer linger longest after you’ve finished. Plenty of “I’m glad I tried that,” or “I hadn’t thought of it like that,” experiences, just as much as those “that was amazing,” moments.
